Photobacterium damselae

Photobacterium damselae

This is a bacterial pathogen that infects fish, marine invertebrates, and a variety of other hosts including humans. In fish the resulting diseases are described as photobacteriosis, fish pasteurellosis, or sometimes vibriosis.

P. damselae in reef tanks

This is the second most commonly detected fish pathogen in reef tank samples.

P. damselae was detected in almost 1 out of every 5 samples we've tested.
This bacterium generally makes up a small fraction of the community (2% or less).
